Project Overview
GIA’s internal software for diamond grading and gem identification required a comprehensive system to track the flow and status of each gem throughout its journey within the lab.

Design Process

We conducted a comprehensive UX study by interviewing subject matter experts (SMEs), documenting requirements, and touring the labs to gain in-depth insights into workflows and user needs.
1: Discover
Interviewed SMEs and toured several flagship locations to gather first-hand insights and uncover key pain points in real-world contexts.
2: Story Mapping
Align pain points and needs with user requirements, referencing the user flow for feature defin.
3: Iterate

Branding & Design System

Due to the light sensitivity requirements of certain equipment, dark mode was established as a key business priority. We developed a customized dark theme that not only optimized visibility and usability in light-restricted environments but also reinforced a cohesive and professional brand identity tailored for precision-based workflows.

Solution

We implemented a system to flag stones for removal or service updates, track progress without manual searches, and prevent premature tasks—streamlined across client, admin, and inspection portals to ensure efficient workflows and quality control.

The 4Cs Pitch Work

We also presented a pitch for GIA focused on developing a mobile app to educate users on the 4Cs of diamond grading—Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat. The concept aimed to simplify complex gemological concepts through interactive visuals, guided exploration, and intuitive UI. This initial pitch was the inspiration for the Beacon branding.
